ON MY TOMB
Here lies a work in progress
not the Alpha and the Omega more like the interim and
post-thought
Wasn’t always that well-spoken
but was always mistaken for Spanish
his confused nods no excuse for looking the part he never played
he should’ve known better
he had a respect for Spiders, crawly things people judged
it pained him to agree with what others said, even if they were right
them being wrong, so very wrong, turned him on secretly
if you were lucky he’d call you for something other than a purpose
constantly scared of breaking something – he was stronger than
he looked
he left this earth not quite stuntin’ like his Daddy but he came close,
never killed as many people as he did – chicken wire was
better than cement shoes for sunken corpses
cruelty an heirloom he lived to spin from
no one volunteered to wear his efforts
Shit – usually came out of it smelling like roses
because he believed his lies he never failed to tell the truth
followed orders without question that was his German side
Was he the best at anything? There’s a story that would take all day
a two-trick pony at best
yes those types of sneakers he wore in the early nineties
at the height of his identity crisis
held his liquor like a colander
poke him full of holes his feelings would not leak
lucky at love later, much much later
women were great for one thing till he met the one
that came with instructions – they made love
she came; with instructions

“love me, and never let go” – he listened
over-thought, and usually went left didn’t get sick a lot
a snazzy dresser once upon a time and approached
all things with the hesitance of a fanatic until
it was too late, every failure he posed on the prow of
the ship one hand in his greatcoat like a 6 foot 1 Napoleon
and went down with it as the band, Like D’angelo he playedinstruments played and sunk alongside him
all
His daughter survives him and is the spitting image of his
shortcomings – his eyebrows, teeth
speech impediment overweening sense of accomplishment in
small spaces
but that’s enough
He died well and accepting, greatness rubbing him
disconsolate, on the upper back and nape of the neck until he
went to sleep
Here lies something that was once something
waited, made something, failed, grew up and passed on something
that may in fact pass for inspiration to know yourself
like it that way, and pawn the rest

“ámame, y nunca me dejes ir” – escuchó
