De Nezayork a Nueva York

ROW TO SUNRISE
I wake, though all around me still lie sleeping
On this late August early morn, still full moon lit.
I rise and think the morning perfect for it.
Not the slightest breeze
Ruffling the leaves of our maple trees.
The first faint colors edge the eastern horizon
Out over this quiet ocean. My eyes on
The dark path through the dunes, I go down
To the water’s edge before sunrise.
No breeze. No waves.

I launch with just a push off, jumping in,
Gliding away from the shore,
But not enough, so pushing on one oar,
I turn the bow more,
Before I push both oars together, lift and glide,
And push again, again to lift and glide.
I’ll go a mile or so before the coming dawn.

The salty air tastes sweet and life is good.
Ahead the skies look fair.
Behind me now the night
Gives way to the gathering light
As I row out to meet the rising sun.
I’ll stow the oars a while to watch it rise,
But in good time, that done,
I’ll rest my eyes,
And back toward shore I’ll turn,
Making my return,
With the sun warm on my back,
Pushing me home.

AFTERNOON TRYST

I feel the fire of your lips
the friction of their heat
that takes away my breath
so I must gasp

I feel the stare of your eyes
as I stare back
falling deep within those liquid pools willingly

I feel your hand upon my chest
you feel my heart beat faster at your touch

The distance between us closes as we merge in hot embrace
our bodies sway

We should be somewhere more alone
where we can do what we both want
and yet we both still stay
indulging now in play
a teasefulness that borders on sweet torment
until reluctantly we part
and kiss farewell but only for awhile
on our lips a smile

Though not soon enough
the night will come

THE LONG GOODBYE

Distant from me now,
Though as close as a phone call.
I see him as often as I can.

And as we dine – a breakfast place, for(No molars left, he still enjoys
The eggs, hash browns and waffles),

I ask him for more stories of his childhood.
Some I’ve heard a hundred times,
But like as not, he often will surprise me
With something good that I’ve not heard before.

Old man with good genes and no bad habits.
Not like his sons, no, all of us
Came up with our bad habits on our own.
He looks so old, so fragile now,
And speaks in such a quiet, raspy voice.
Just turned ninety-six,
And doc says he’s in good health.

Still growing flowers, fruits and vegetables.
Writes short religious poems, one each day.
(Granted, hits the mark one time in forty.)

Each time I can travel all that distance –
I don’t get all emotional, when we say goodbyeBut each time, I am so aware how old he is,
This man I love, my dad.
I tell myself perhaps, no, probably,
I’ll see him yet again.

Next time, I would like to ask,
But only when his young wife’s not around,
“Tell me dad, again, how you met mom.”

That’s how things stand these days for dad and me.
It doesn’t happen all at once.
This is the long goodbye.

Empujándome a casa.

CITA VESPERTINA

Me digo quizás, no, probablemente,
“Dime papá, otra vez, cómo conociste a mamá.”
